How to film great event videos on your phone

Phones catch the moments a main camera can't be everywhere for: arrivals, reactions and conversations at the back of the room. Whether a videographer is covering the stage or your team is filming it all, good phone footage makes the event film richer. We have edited more than 400 event films; here is what makes phone clips usable.

What you need
  • Charged phones
  • Free storage
  • A plan of the day

Start with what attendees want to see

Before the day, list the moments people will want to relive and the questions your next attendees will ask: what was it like, who spoke, was it worth it? Each answer is something to film.

Tap a question to see the video it becomes.

  • The videoA 60-second recap of arrivals, reactions and the room at its busiest.
  • The videoSpeaker clips, one strong idea each, for LinkedIn and Reels.
  • The videoShort attendee testimonials, filmed in a quiet corner.
  • The videoA highlight film that sells the next event.

Give each person on your team one job: one films the stage, one films people and details, one collects short interviews. Covering less, well, beats filming everything badly.

  • StageTalks, panels and awards.

Set up the phone properly

Hold the phone sideways. 16:9, the shape of YouTube and your website. Hold the phone upright. 9:16, the shape of Reels, Shorts and TikTok. Film sideways, leave space around the speaker. We crop the vertical version from the middle.

Work with the venue's light

Event light changes all the time. For interviews, face the person toward a window or the brightest light in the room, never with a window or stage lights behind them. For the stage, film from the middle of the room rather than the side, so faces are lit.

Soft daylight on the face. Even, flattering, easy to color in the edit.A silhouette. The phone exposes for the bright window and the face goes dark.

Avoid mixed colors on faces where you can: warm lamps and cold daylight together are hard to correct. Consistent light makes it easier to match your phone clips to the main camera.

Get clear sound in a busy room

Phones pick up the crowd before the speaker. For talks, ask the AV team for a recording from the sound desk; it is the best audio of the day. For interviews, step into a quiet corner and keep the phone close.

Help people talk naturally on camera

Do
  • Ask open questions
  • Let them look at you, not the lens
  • Keep each answer short
  • Ask them to repeat the question
Avoid
  • Ask yes-or-no questions
  • Interview next to the music
  • Hold the phone far away
  • Cut people off mid-story

For attendee and speaker interviews, ask open questions and let people look at you rather than the lens; it feels like a real conversation. Ask them to include your question in their answer, so the clip makes sense on its own.

Don't worry about mistakes. If an answer goes wrong, ask again. In the edit we keep the best answer and remove the rest.

  3. Take 2Stumbled on a word
  4. Take 3Clear and calm
Mistakes, pauses and restarts are normal. Keep going.Only the best take reaches your audience.

Respect your attendees

Let attendees know filming is happening, on the invitation and at the door. Ask before interviewing anyone, and respect people who would rather not appear. For medical, corporate or private events, check what can be shown publicly. If something slips in, we can blur it in the edit.

Send the clips and let the edit do the heavy lifting

Upload the original files from your phone to Google Drive, Dropbox or WeTransfer rather than sending them by messaging apps, which compress the video. Ask your team and attendees to share theirs the same way. In the edit we match every phone to the main footage, build the story from the best moments, add captions, and deliver a recap, a highlight film and clips.
