How to film great social media videos on your phone

Reels, Shorts and TikToks are made for phones. The accounts that grow aren't the ones with the best camera; they post useful, recognizable videos on a steady rhythm. Here's how to film them so they're quick to edit and easy to watch.

What you need
  • Your phone
  • A window
  • A list of ideas

Start with the questions your followers ask

The posts people save and share answer a question in seconds. Write down what customers ask you, what they get wrong and what surprises them. Each one is a short video.

Tap a question to see the video it becomes.

  • The videoA quick how-to: the problem, three steps and the result, in under 45 seconds.
  • The videoA myth-busting clip that opens with the mistake on screen.
  • The videoBehind the scenes: your work, your team and your process.
  • The videoA customer's before and after, told in their own words.

Mix in videos that show who you are. Followers turn into customers when they recognize the face behind the account.

  • YouWho you are, on camera.
  • Behind the scenesYour work as it happens.
  • CustomersReal stories and results.

Set up the phone properly

Hold the phone sideways. 16:9, the shape of YouTube and your website. Hold the phone upright. 9:16, the shape of Reels, Shorts and TikTok. Film sideways, leave space around the speaker. We crop the vertical version from the middle.

Use the light you already have

Face a window, with the window behind the phone. Soft daylight on the face looks better than any ring light in a dark room. Avoid standing with a window behind you, which turns you into a silhouette.

Soft daylight on the face. Even, flattering, easy to color in the edit.A silhouette. The phone exposes for the bright window and the face goes dark.

Film several videos in one session, in the same spot and the same light. Your feed looks consistent, and you only set up once a week.

Get clear sound in an ordinary room

Many people watch with the sound off, so we always add captions. Those who turn the sound on leave quickly if it's echoey or noisy. Film in a quiet room, switch off fans and air conditioning, and keep the phone within an arm's length.

Hook them in the first second

Do
  • Say the point first
  • Look at the lens
  • One idea per video
  • Film a few versions of the opening
Avoid
  • Start with "Hi guys"
  • Explain the background first
  • Cram three tips into one clip
  • Worry about being polished

Look at the lens and say the most interesting line first: the result, the mistake or the surprising fact. Then explain. One idea per video keeps it short and makes it easy to share.

Don't worry about mistakes. Pause, then start the sentence again. In the edit we keep the best take and remove the rest, so you never need to get it perfect in one go.

  1. Take 1Lost the sentence
  2. PauseStarted again
  3. Take 2Stumbled on a word
  4. Take 3Clear and calm
Mistakes, pauses and restarts are normal. Keep going.Only the best take reaches your feed.

Check what's in the frame

When you film in public, at work or with customers, ask before people appear on camera. Check your background for screens, house numbers, car plates and anything private. If something slips in, we can blur it in the edit.

Send the clips and let the edit do the heavy lifting

Upload the original files from your phone to Google Drive, Dropbox or WeTransfer rather than sending them by messaging apps, which compress the video. In the edit we move the strongest line to the start, tighten the talking, add bold captions and your brand style, and deliver versions for every platform.
